On July 11, global urban air mobility (UAM) leader EHang Intelligent Technology and Tsinghua University jointly inaugurated the "Tsinghua-Ehang Joint Institute for Low Altitude Aviation Technology" (JILAAT). This institute aims to create an industry-academia-research innovation platform in low-altitude aviation technology, accelerate breakthroughs in core technologies and industrial applications, cultivate high-end talent, and advance the high-quality development of the strategic emerging low-altitude economy.
Prior to the unveiling ceremony, Tsinghua University President and CAS Academician Li Luming met with EHang COO Wang Zhao and delegates. President Li congratulated the establishment of JILAAT, emphasizing Tsinghua’s commitment to leveraging its academic resources to collaborate with EHang in fostering secure and intelligent low-altitude economic growth. Executive Vice President Zeng Rong, EHang COO Wang Zhao, and representatives from both parties witnessed the historic milestone.
Focusing on Core Technologies: Building an Integrated Innovation Chain
JILAAT integrates Tsinghua’s multidisciplinary expertise in aerospace, vehicle engineering, and computer science with EHang’s practical experience in eVTOL R&D and commercialization. Zeng Rong, Executive Vice President of Tsinghua and Director of JILAAT’s Management Committee, stated that the institute will prioritize low-altitude aircraft design, next-generation propulsion systems, autonomous flight control, and regulatory technologies. Its mission is to establish a full-chain innovation system spanning "fundamental research–technical攻坚–industrial application" while pioneering industry-academia collaborative education models.
Chen Haixin, Director of JILAAT and Party Secretary of Tsinghua’s School of Aerospace Engineering, announced key research areas: aerodynamics and system design for large autonomous aircraft, energy and propulsion, flight control systems, low-altitude traffic management, autonomous command centers, and vertiport infrastructure planning.
Strategic Synergy Driving Industry Advancement
EHang founder, Chairman, CEO, and JILAAT Deputy Director Hu Huazhi highlighted EHang’s Tsinghua-rooted legacy, pledging to harness the university’s research prowess through a "theory-practice-transformation" model to upgrade aerospace industries and pioneer a safe, intelligent, eco-friendly low-altitude era. COO Wang Zhao underscored that JILAAT marks a new phase in industry-academia integration, accelerating technological breakthroughs, disciplinary development, and talent cultivation.
