In August this year, Chengdu will host the 12th edition of The World Games (TWG) 2025. This marks the first time mainland China will host this prestigious international multi-sport event.
Air sports, involving aircraft or equipment navigating the skies, are an emerging athletic discipline in China. Drone racing ranks as the world's fastest-growing air sport and has established a series of international competitions, such as World Championships and World Cups. It made its TWG debut in 2022.
Featuring drone racing as a discipline within the air sports program, the Chengdu World Games will showcase this highly spectator-friendly event. Drone racing is an emerging tech-sport that masterfully integrates cutting-edge technology, blistering speed, and advanced piloting skills, earning it the evocative nickname "F1 of the Skies."
The drone racing competition is scheduled for August 14-16 at the outdoor athletics stadium of Chengdu's Dong'an Lake Sports Park. The three-day event will follow a mixed-gender format, comprising qualification rounds, elimination heats, and finals. Thirty-two elite drone racing pilots from around the globe will compete for glory.
Pilots, wearing FPV (First-Person View) goggles, navigate their drones through a challenging course of obstacle gates along a predetermined flight path. The competitor completing the required number of laps in the shortest time is declared the winner. One gold medal will be awarded in this event.
Drone racing transcends being merely a high-speed sport; it demands a comprehensive test of an athlete's technical expertise, mental fortitude, physical conditioning, and strategic acumen. Top pilots require the mechanical tuning proficiency of an F1 engineer, the lightning-fast reflexes of an esports athlete, and the pressure resilience of an extreme sportsperson. The true allure of drone racing lies in its relentless challenge to the limits of human-machine synergy.
